Genealogist Betts Harvey prides herself on spotlighting missing ancestral links and restoring life to dying branches of family trees. When a client asks her to find an heir for a centuries-old book of herbal recipes and seeds, the outcome is a brutal case of lights out in a cold alley. Someone wants the book badly enough to kill for it. Determined to protect the heirloom, Betts works to expose the murderer with the help of Warren, her retired firefighter boyfriend, and Philly, coffee-break buddy and local mud-run champion. Trouble doubles when police suspect Betts. How does a crime novice keep the law at bay and protect herself and her friends from a poisoner, one who has her name at the top of a killer to-do list?

A small town called Elmira is the site for the cozy mystery Do You Know the Lantern Man?, where Sheila, Fayette, and Kitsy, three members of the Reading Club of Retired and Capable Ladies, find themselves embroiled in the affairs of a poisoned and kidnapped pastor as well as a misplaced specter from East Anglia called The Lantern Man. To make matters worse, they become police suspects and targets of a group of men calling themselves The Guild of the Supreme Brotherhood of Manroots. She gets lost in the forest, but with the help of a star and a crow, the little dwarf finds the chef’s cottage. He gives her an important secret to deliver to the head chef, sends her back to the kitchens, and she is able to redeem herself and help the head chef create the great dwarf solstice cake.
